welcome to our little veggie sale

Square Roots North End is a volunteer-run community initiative that takes place once a month in the North End of Halifax, Nova Scotia. We hold a little veggie sale to provide fresh, affordable produce to our community.

The goal of this program is to eliminate food waste while providing affordable produce to our community. We achieve this by working with local farmers to purchase seconds produce and resell it to the community for just $1/lbs.

We host one sale each month, with the goal of providing all produce for free at two sales per year. Since January 2024, we have provided more than 30,000 lbs of affordable produce to the community.

As a volunteer-run registered community initiative, we are one of more than 10 locations across the province. We rely on community grants and corporate partners to make this vital program a reality.

how we got started

In December 2023, MacKenzie Mayer, a local community advocate who works in nonprofit, was a regular customer of Square Roots, primarily shopping at the Hydrostone location. When she discovered the current mother-daughter duo who ran the location had decided to give it up, she realized how vital it was for her community and decided to volunteer to take it over.

She brought on sister Cameron, a local real estate agent active in her community, and long-time friend, Angela, the founder of My Grandfather’s Cat, to be the Co-Community Managers.
