how it works

the veggie order

On Monday before each sale, we are provided with a list of seconds produce from local farmers, organized by our friends at Enactus Saint Marys.

We choose at least ten items and announce it to our social community and our email list. Based on the number of RSVPs we receive, we place the order — which is typically around 1500 lbs.

friday pick-up

On Friday night before the sale, all Square Roots locations meet to pick up the produce which is delivered to a location in Fairview. Our volunteers load the veggies into their cars and we store it until Sunday.

sunday sale day

On Sunday morning, we bring the veggies to our sale location at 2700 Robie St, Halifax, along with tables, signage, decorations and more. Our volunteers set up the sale, ready to open the doors at 10:30 am and hold the sale until noon.

As produce is first serve, many customers choose to line up before our doors open, but our goal is to have enough for everyone and not run out. Once doors open, customers choose each item of produce they’d like and then weigh the produce at the scale at the end. We often have more than 100 people attend each sale. All produce is $1/lbs and we accept cash, debit, credit and etransfer.

During the sale, our volunteers continue to load produce into the boxes and help customers with any questions they may have.

We often have other elements to the sale, such as our Community Table, which allows community members to share items they have abundance of with each other, and a colouring table for kids.

after the sale

Once the sale is complete, we pack up the extra produce and donate it to our local community fridges, to make sure nothing goes to waste. We often donate to our friends at Halifax Community Fridge, Dartmouth Community Fridge and Veith House.
